Privacy policy
If you have a question about your data, please write to the team behind VaryHue at hello@varyhue.com.
Your food diary, household members, postcards, shopping list, settings and any meal photos you choose to keep stay on your phone. You don't need an account to use VaryHue.
When you use voice, a photo or a description, the words or the photo go to our server and to Anthropic, the company whose AI model reads them, to find the foods. They are processed and then discarded, and Anthropic does not use them to train its models. Location information is removed from photos before they leave your phone. Your phone's own speech service turns your voice into words, and it may send the audio to Apple or Google to do that.
If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive an account id from them, never your password. With sync turned on, your diary is kept on our server in Germany so it can reach your other phones. It is protected on the way and kept just for you, but it is not end-to-end encrypted, so our server can read it. We look at it when we need to keep the service running, and at no other time.
Cloud backups are encrypted on your phone with a key that you alone hold, so we cannot read them. We keep up to 30 daily backups, and they stay for a year after VaryHue+ ends.
Purchases go through the App Store or Google Play and through RevenueCat, which tells us whether you have VaryHue+. We never see your card details. RevenueCat knows your purchase by a random id from your phone, or by your account id when you are signed in.
When you scan a barcode or search for a product, the barcode or the search words go to Open Food Facts, a public food database. Nothing else about you is sent.
To count free tries, our server keeps a note of how many your account has used. To stop misuse, it also keeps a random id from your phone and, for a day at most, your internet address.
There are no ads and no tracking tools in VaryHue, and we never sell your data.
You can export everything at any time in Settings, and Delete everything removes your data from your phone and from our server, including backups. Under the GDPR you can also ask us for a copy of your data, a correction or its deletion, and you can complain to your data protection authority.
VaryHue is for people aged 16 and over. Children can take part as household members set up by an adult, and their entries stay on the phone unless the adult turns on syncing for them.
If this policy changes, we will tell you in the app.
